Professional Development Opportunities
Spring 2017 AVID for Higher Education (AHE) Practicum
This series of professional development will focus on high engagement teaching strategies to invigorate classroom discussion and learning. Each offered technique will focus on one, or a combination of, core competencies in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and/or Reading.
Session 1: Friday, February 10th at the 10:15 - 11:30 AM Breakout Session at the Completing College Conference (room location TBA). We encourage all participants to attend the entire conference 8:30AM - 3:00PM
Session 2: March 10th from 10:00AM- 12:00PM in LRC 107
Session 3: April 7th from 10:00AM- 12:00PM in LRC 107

Spring 2017 Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) Practicum
This series of professional development workshops focuses on the text Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom by John C. Bean.
The program schedule is:
March 3rd, 12-2 pm: Ways to Use Writing in Any Course to Increase Learning
March 31st, 12-2 pm: How to Create Assignments that Engage Learners in Any Course
April 21st, 12-2 pm: How to Assess and Evaluate Writing in a Non-Writing Course
Status: Although this practicum as already begun, it is possible that room is available for upcoming sessions. Please contact Catherine Hayter or Michelle Duffy if interested!
Completing College Conference: Working Across the Disciplines to Support Completion, Persistence and Retention
Friday, February 10th from 8:30am-3pm: The Basic Skills Committee is coordinating this year’s Completing College Conference, featuring speakers and topics centered on “high engagement practices” and “student equity support.” Guest keynote speakers include Dr. Vincent Tinto and Dr. Deborah Harrington.
The AVID for Higher Education Blackboard website offers several sources for instructional strategies, including videos, texts and handouts, plus monthly editions of the AVID Weekly, which contains critical reading instruction, articles appropriate for developmental and advanced college reading, plus items for visual analysis.
To Access AVID for Higher Education Blackboard:
- Log in Blackboard
- Click on Community Tab
- Click Browse Organization Catalog
- Type in "AVID" in the search box
- Hover the Organization and click on the gray arrow, select Enroll
- Click Submit
